Developing Capacities for Community-based Micro-hydro Power Projects in the Maluku Province of Indonesia

The projects contributes to the development of several related sectors/themes:
Water management: development of educational and research capacities on proper use of available water resources (and avoidance of planning) mistakes in the use of such resources), are at the heart of the project;
Education: with a focus on water management and micro hydro power generation in a broad sense, the Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of the TU Delft and the Christian University of Ambon / UKIM will cooperate on reviewing and strengthening UKIM’s educational capacities, in order to strengthen UKIM’s position as a knowledge centre in the Maluku region;
Infrastructure: the projects aims to improve the rural provision of electricity services, by seeking to promote community-based approaches for micro-hydro projects;
Environment: the project will promote micro-hydro power as an alternative for diesel-fueled power generation, thus avoiding significant volumes of CO2 emissions and other air pollutants. Furthermore, by developing strong capacities on water management, planning mistakes in water resource use that could harm water availability to humans or nature, can be avoided.

The focus of this capacity building project will be placed on making the existing know-how available to those who can mobilize it to realize new projects in the region. By strengthening the capacities of UKIM to be a regional know-how platform on micro-hydro projects, the project aims to contribute to sustainable rural electrification in the Maluku region. This will help bridge the development gap between Maluku region and western parts of the country, by filling in a vital component of the socio-economic development of communities.
